VAR and referees useless in the Czech Republic? Compared to Spain, golden. That’s how they messed up the game between Sevilla and Real Madrid

In the Czech league we often complain about the referees and the VAR system. But considering the mistakes they make in Spain, there is nothing to complain about. The referees and VAR were very active in the match between Sevilla and Real Madrid.

A celebration of football, an incredible turnaround, five goals and a stormy atmosphere. That was the match between Sevilla and Real Madrid at the Ramón Sanchéz Pizjuán. But it was also a huge error by the referees that marred an otherwise very attractive match.

Hand – Refereeing and VAR errors

Referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernández didn’t sleep well on Sunday. Already in the 19th minute, he missed a clear hand in the Sevilla penalty area by stopper Diego Carlos, who “volleyed” the ball towards Camavingo, who was cleared into an empty net.

But he may not have seen the situation completely clearly, which makes it all the less understandable that VAR didn’t even give him the intervention to go and look at the situation. So this error goes to the video referee.

Red – referee’s error

In the 39th minute, the referee made another error. Visiting Eduardo Camavinga had already been shown a yellow card, only that a fighter with an aggressive style of play often forgets that. When Anthony Martial was on the break, Camavinga stopped him with a foul and a second yellow and red card should have been forthcoming.

But the head referee didn’t even blow the whistle for the foul, he gave Martial a yellow card for protesting and the French footballer walked away from the match injured. This mistake only goes beyond the referee, VAR could only intervene if it was a foul on a direct red card.

Vínicius’ hand – Referee’s error

The most speculated moment of the match. And if Real Madrid had cost the game, Guillermo Cuadra Fernández would have become the most hated man in Madrid. In the 76th minute, the Merengues finally got their equaliser after a Vinícius strike. But Los Blancos’ joy was spoiled by the referee, to the absolute incomprehension of the players.

According to him, Vinícius had handled the ball with his hand, although according to all available footage the ball fell on his shoulder. According to the rules, processing into the sleeve area is recognised, which it certainly met.

The referee was even invited to the VAR, which thus fulfilled its function. However, despite a thorough on-screen review, the referee stood by his questionable decision.

It is all the more surprising that the referee judged it as a hand with Vinícius, but not with Diego Carlos. The difference between the two situations is enormous.

Even Emilio Butragueño, a Real Madrid legend and current club official, has taken a swipe at the referees. He is known for his diplomacy, even after the biggest mistakes he did not comment on the referee, but this time he did not hold back.

“If you compare the hand of Diego Carlos with the hand of Vinícius… and you can’t believe it. Fortunately we won, but we don’t understand that VAR doesn’t let the referee know when Carlos’ hand is on. And that he blows the whistle on Vinícius’ hand after he’s looked at it several times… That is incomprehensible,” said Butragueño.

But Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui also complained. “The referee has damaged us. Camavinga should have been given a clear red card. And Vinícius’ hand was seen by everyone in the stadium,” the former Real Madrid coach snarled.
