Valuable wins for Muchova or Siniakova, Pliskova again failed as favourite
The women’s tournament in Miami is in full swing, with Round 2 currently underway. Three Czech women (Muchova, Siniakova, Pliskova) have already finished it. While the first two mentioned had very tough opponents, Karolina Pliskova was the clear favourite. How did this Czech trio fare?
The women’s tournament in Miami is in full swing, with Round 2 currently underway. Three Czech women (Muchova, Siniakova, Pliskova) have already completed it. While the first two mentioned had very tough opponents, Karolina Pliskova was the clear favourite. How did this Czech trio fare?
Muchova took on the US Open finalist
Karolína Muchová is back. After a long 6 months of absence, she is back on the tennis circuit. Her comeback was successful in Miami, when she beat her compatriot Martinsova (7::6, 7::6) in the 1st round. In the 2nd round, she faced the finalist of the US Open, Canadian Fernandez. The Czech tennis player could only surprise.
And she did. Muchova was the better player throughout the match, she was better on the return, she managed most of the key moments of the match better than the Canadian.
She handled the endings of both sets very well and after winning 6::4, 7::6 she scored a valuable scalp of her opponent. She will face Osaka in the 3rd round and she will not expect anything easy.
A valuable scalp for Siniakova
Katerina Siniakova also had a tough draw, her opponent was Raducanu. The 2021 US Open winner, however, is now struggling greatly. The Czech tennis player was on the short end of the stick for most of the match, losing the first set 6::3.
The next set was not very positive for her either, with Bitka leading 3:1 and on her way to the 3rd round. But Siniakova fought back, won 5 of the last 6 games and forced a deciding set.
Raducanu was better in this set most of the time. When she took a 5:3 lead, it seemed that she would already finish her efforts. But Siniakova didn’t give up and made a great turnaround.
She won 4 games in a row, finally winning 3::6, 6::4, 7::5 against the British player and advancing to the next stage of the tournament. She will play against Saville for a place in the eighth round, which is quite a favourable draw.
Pliskova again finishes in the 2nd round
While Muchova and Siniakova scored big triumphs over the favourites, it was not so positive in the case of Karolina Pliskova. The Czech number two is coming back from injury. She made her comeback at the Indian Wells tournament, where she fell to Kovinic in the very beginning of the tournament.
She wanted to try to make amends at the American event in Miami, in the 2nd round she was facing Russian Kalinskaya (84th in the ranking). But that didn’t happen, and Pliskova again gave a very below-average performance. She lost her serve a total of seven times, which her opponent took perfect advantage of.
The Czech player lost 3::6 3::6 and her tournament journey ends again before it even started. Her game is not ideal, let’s see how she fares in the clay part of the season.
