Czech and Slovak among the best players in one of the best competitions in Europe? It’s a beautiful reality. Václav Černý and Dávid Hancko are having a great season. One is pulling for Twente, the other for Feyenoord.
The Dutch Eredivisie has reached its 31st league round and there are only three games left in the competition. Barring a miracle, Feyenoord are all but assured of winning the league title. They have an eight-point lead over second-placed PSV Eindhoven.
The team from Rotterdam has lost only one game in the league and took an important step towards the title on Sunday when they beat Excelsior. Feyenoord have the second best defence in the league and a big part of that is former Sparta Prague player Dávid Hancko.
The Slovakian international has been performing excellently, his price has increased rapidly and he will probably be in demand in the top leagues in the summer.
The prestigious statistics site Sofascore gives him an average grade of 7.39 for his performances in the league, making him the ninth best player in the Eredivisie this season. He is the highest-rated defender in the competition.
Czech winger Vaclav Cerny is even better with an average grade. He boasts a rating of 7.47 and is in a nice sixth place in the league. And deservedly so.
Cerny is having an excellent season. He’s dragging Twente into Europe. But at the moment, he is only assured of a play-off place for qualification to the Conference Europa League preliminary round.
Twente would have to hope for a miracle if they want to qualify directly for this European competition. Alkmaar have a six-point lead.
Anyway, Cerny scored another league goal on Sunday. He has now scored 11 league goals and added eight assists. It is likely that Twente will not keep him for next season.
