US Open: The American Dream! After a record-breaking break, the U.S. representative will be in the Grand Slam final
The history of American tennis doesn’t remember that. For fifteen years, white fans in the USA had to wait for their representative in the final of a Grand Slam tournament. This year, they’re finally getting their chance. All that remains to be decided is who it will be.

- The USA will have a representative in the Grand Slam final
- American fans have had to wait 15 years for this feat
- The finalist will be decided in the Fritz-Tiafoe duel
Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras or Andre Agassi. There are several American tennis champions of the highest level. But recently, the wellspring of stars representing the stars and stripes has almost dried up.
The last US representative in a Grand Slam final was Andy Roddick. He played in the Wimbledon final in 2009. Fifteen long years ago.
And after Tuesday’s quarterfinal program, it’s clear the wait is over. Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz are in the semifinals together.
The only question left to be resolved is which of these tennis players will break the negative streak without an American finalist. Their match will be one of the highlights of the program in New York.
Big wins at the US Open
Tiafoe claimed the position of the favorite with several of his results. Most notably two weeks ago at the Masters in Cincinnati, where he was beaten only by Sinner in the final. The American’s stunts that bordered on the rules of decency also attracted attention.
At his home Major, he had a solid draw early in the tournament as a seeded 20, and later flashed in the derby with Shelton. Subsequently, neither Djokovic’s conqueror Popyrin nor Bulgaria’s Dimitrov came to Tiafoe’s rescue, scrapping the match with him at 1-2 sets.
The other American Fritz took care of another big favourite. He defeated the fresh world number two Zverev in four sets. In the same way he came a round earlier to the tournament’s number eight Ruud. Those were the only two sets Fritz lost in New York this year.
Fritz will be the favorite in the American semifinals, especially with his record against each other. Fritz, who is two months older, has won all six of his last matches. The duel is scheduled for Friday night our time.
