Chelsea brought in Enzo Fernandez, Arsenal brought in Jorginho, Manchester United brought in Marcel Sabitzer. Premier League clubs were mainly hunting for central midfielders on Deadline Day, with Erik Ten Hag scouted by Bayern Munich. But she hasn’t played much in the last year and a half.

Despite a horrible start to the season, the Red Devils have found the backbone of the team to build on since September. Its indispensable part is the central trio of Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, which works both forward and back.

However, Eriksen was injured in the FA Cup game against Reading at the weekend and will miss at least until April. Given the health problems of Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek, Manchester brought in Marcel Sabitzer.

“He wasn’t getting into the Bayern lineup. I know they have two walls in midfield, but it would be good if he at least pushed them. But that hasn’t happened and it’s causing panic. No one was interested in him on the first of January,” former England international Paul Merson told Sky Sports.

Sabitzer was simply a last-minute choice. Erik Ten Hag needed a player who would be able to attack the starting line-up immediately, and who would be able to fulfil Eriksen’s role as a player with the instructions of a six and an eight.

And although Sabitzer hasn’t played much since his transfer to Bayern Munich a year and a half ago, he could fill the position of the Danish international. At Leipzig he was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga, on the other hand, the transition to the Premier League tends to be difficult.

“They are buying a second-rate Bayern player. He wasn’t even close to the starting line-up. I have to ask myself, will a player like that help United? I’m not sure,” Merson added.

Sabitzer fits into English football with his stocky physique. He is no match for Eriksen in terms of movement, but that’s what Bruno is for, and he does a lot of running around. Even the experienced Casemiro will do a lot of the work.

And Sabitzer makes up for his poorer movement with accurate passes behind the defense. Marcus Rashford and Anthony have a lot to look forward to, the Austrian midfielder can break through the midfield and get his teammates out.

“He is a player with potential, very important for the Austrian national team. He was the most important player for Leipzig on their way to the Champions League semi-finals. He can certainly help, but whether he replaces Eriksen we will have to wait and see,” thinks Sky Sports German expert Uli Kohler.
