Medvedev on court
Last year was a very successful year for him. Daniil Medvedev won five titles on the ATP circuit. This year he shone at the Australian Open.
At the opening Grand Slam of the season, he reached the final, but lost a promising match to Italy’s Sinner. In Dubai at the end of February, his attempt to defend one of last year’s titles failed again.
This discipline, i.e. the defence of the triumph, is by the way a weakness of the 28-year-old Russian. This is a feat he has never done before in his career.
In Indian Wells, the nearly two-metre tall tennis player repeated the story from Australia. Once again, he fell in the final. This time with another representative of the rising generation, Spain’s Alcaraz. But it was impossible to miss the Russian tennis player in California.
A heated match with Rune
Medvedev made his presence felt in the quarterfinals. And not just tennis. He beat Dane Rune without losing a set.
But there were some unusual moments during the match. After the Dane hit the Russian tennis player with the ball, the latter did not notice his apology and demanded it.
In other moments, Medvedev dealt with his sense of injustice in his own way. The highlight was a parody of his opponent. In it, the former world number one imitated Rune’s pulling of the shorts.
In the end, it all turned out to be a tempest in a teacup. Even the referee confirmed to Medvedev after the match that an apology had been made. But the Russian tennis player’s performance cannot be taken back.
However, this is not the first time that Medvedev’s behaviour on court can be judged as at least questionable. Germany’s Zverev, for example, rates him as one of the most unfair players on the ATP circuit.
Thus, the Russian tennis player is at least not bored, a given moment surpassed even the bee swarm in California, which was another highlight of the tournament. But the question is whether the public will start to lean towards the view presented by Zverev.
