Connor Bedard is about to have his debut season in the NHL, for which he is preparing not only on the ice, but also physically and mentally. Logically, he is getting valuable advice from one of the most knowledgeable – Connor McDavid. What did the star Canadian advise him before his NHL debut?
The number one draft pick, one of the most talented players on the planet, the second McDavid, a future legend. That’s exactly how experts and media around the world talk about Connor Bedard.
But for a young man still only 18 years old, the challenge of his first season in the NHL is something he should understandably prepare for.
So the Chicago Blackhawks hockey player is picking up some valuable advice. And who else to turn to in this case but the current best player on the planet – Connor McDavid. He made his debut in the Canadian-American competition in the 2015-16 season and has since proved countless times that there is simply no better hockey player on the ice right now.
“He says a lot of useful things and he’s obviously one of the best players in the world, if not the best. He’s someone I could be a sponge for and ask questions of,” Bedard said in an interview with NHL.com.
“I’m not going to say anything crazy specific, but he definitely gave me some advice on what to expect (from opening season). Obviously it’s not an easy league, it’s the best in the world. But I think it’s just a matter of preparing as best as possible, and I feel like I did that this summer, ” Bedard revealed in an interview.
The pressure on Bedard and Chicago is immense
There will no doubt be tremendous pressure on Bedard. After all, he’s the clear number one pick in the draft, a player who scored 143 points (71+72) in 57 games last season in the WHL.
Crazy stat. Add to that the fact that he’s already being talked about as a symbol of the future for the Blackhawks, who will enter the new year without former captain Jonathan Toews and forward Patrick Kane for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
It’s a lot to ask of an 18-year-old talent. The Blackhawks have also only made the playoffs once in the last six seasons. So it’s a similar situation to what McDavid experienced when he joined the Oilers, who missed the playoffs for nine long years.
“For me and for him, we both just love hockey so much. I think if you’re worried about what other people say or what you write about me or anything else … I’m just trying to pursue my dream. I want to do well, I’m very hard on myself. I think the pressure will go away the moment I just do what I enjoy,” Bedard said.
