The Australian Grand Prix will be on the Formula 1 World Championship calendar for a very long time indeed, until 2035! This year it even broke the attendance record, what did Domenicali say about the extension of the collaboration?
Formula 1 returned to the Melbourne circuit after two years – the 2020 Australian Grand Prix was not held due to precautions taken in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and last year it also didn’t fit into the calendar.
This year, however, the race was back and worth it for fans. The third race of the 2022 season was dominated by Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari, this Grand Prix also broke attendance records. F1 has now extended its contract with Australia until 2035.
The 2022 Australian Grand Prix broke the attendance benchmark set last year. F1’s best attendance last season came on the occasion of the US Grand Prix in Austin, when 400,000 spectators visited the circuit during the race weekend.
The race weekend in Australia, however, was watched by twenty thousand more spectators! For the third race of the season, Formula 1 already surpassed the best attendance of last year, with 420,000 fans passing through the gates of Albert Park over the weekend.
It is Albert Park that has hosted the Australian Grand Prix since 1996, with significant investment in the circuit over the last two years.
“I am delighted to confirm that Melbourne and Albert Park will be on the Formula One calendar until 2035. This race has always been a favourite for fans, drivers and teams alike. Melbourne is a beautiful city, which is ideal for Formula 1 racing, ” said the president of the Queen of Motorsport, Stefano Domenicali, in an interview with F1.
Australia’s current contract expires in 2025 and the 10-year extension is one of a number of big contracts.
The Las Vegas race will return to the F1 calendar next year. Domenicali is also currently in talks to include the South African Grand Prix in the World Championship.
However, recent reports suggest that the French Grand Prix would have to leave the calendar. Unfortunately, there is also a big question mark hanging over the Belgian race at the moment.
