Unbelievable! Austria turns the game against Finland with two tenths to go and celebrates an important victory towards salvation

An incredible match took place in Group A. Favoured Finland was leading 2:0 and going for the win, but there was a tie and finally a turnaround in the last two tenths of a second. The Austrians took an important step towards salvation.

Both teams are fighting for completely different positions at the World Championship. While the Finns are one of the main candidates to win the whole tournament, Austria is fighting to stay among the elite.

And right from the start of the game, it was evident. At 2:51 the Finns took the lead when Saku Maenalanen got the puck after a pass from behind the net and he easily beat the Austrian goalie.

The underdogs scored less than six minutes later when Oliver Kapanen got a deflected shot and, as usual, he didn’t hesitate to put the puck in the net. It seemed that Finland was going for a smooth win.

But that was a mistake, as Jere Innala missed his big chance and then it was Austria who started to play. In the second period, they were the better team on the field thanks to the power plays, but before the power plays came the reduction.

Michael Raffl’s pass was handled by Mario Huber, whose shot gave Austria hope for a point. And at the start of the third period, the players and the fans rejoiced at the equalizer, but Dominic Zwerger’s goal was disallowed.

The reason was the position of the attacking player in the goal area. It cannot be said that this moment put Austria down. Our southern neighbour managed to equalise at 49:51!

The lucky scorer was defenseman Thimo Nickl, who fired from the blue line and although no one was checking the puck, it went through to the net. It was clear that it was going to be an exciting battle until the last minutes.

And that we were in for it. Finland didn’t deserve the win and didn’t seem to want it. Austria, on the other hand, fought back and finally got it! They made the decision with two tenths to go and celebrated an important win towards salvation.
