Bayern Munich were looking for a new number nine before the start of the season and managed to get one of the best in the world. Harry Kane has gone to Bayern. However, the transfer did not come easily and Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness had his say.
The Bavarian giant dominated the Bundesliga last season, but that was all. The performance was not always ideal. The situation did not improve even after the change of coach when Julian Nagelsmann was unexpectedly sacked and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.
One of the reasons why Bayern suffered was the absence of a top striker. After the departure of Robert Lewandowski, no one was brought in to replace him. A year on trial was enough, but Munich didn’t want a second year without a quality goalscorer.
That’s why the club management decided to bring in one of the most qualified. Harry Kane is one of the best strikers of the last few years, long dreams of trophies, loyal, a leader. Combined with Bayern, a perfect combination.
But Tottenham didn’t want to give up their star. Much has been made of the behaviour of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is one of those people you don’t want to deal with. The words of Uli Hoeness, who talked about the whole meeting, are a great testimony to that.
“After weeks of deliberation and constant rejection, we reached a verbal agreement one day at midnight. But by 2:50, none of it was valid. In the evening Tottenham demanded an even larger sum. Jan (Christian Dreesen, Bayern’s managing director) then said that we would not give a penny more,” Hoeness told Welt am Sonntag.
“It took Levy six hours to accept our offer. Harry said that morning that if it wasn’t resolved by the end of the day, he would play for Tottenham and leave for free after the season,” the Bayern honorary president added.
As we now know, Kane did eventually transfer, but for a sum that Hoeness doesn’t agree with in the slightest. He says that four years ago he could not imagine Bayern spending that kind of money on a player.
“In life you have to be prepared to reassess things sometimes. We have had a season that we are not happy with. The main reason was the absence of the number nine,” Hoeness pointed out.
Besides, the Bayern legend revealed that Kane came for less than 100 million euros, however, the amount could still increase depending on whether the Bavarian giant wins the Bundesliga or the Champions League.
If Kane doesn’t work out, Bayern have been targeting Randall Kolo Muani, who even Hoeness felt was the perfect alternative.
