There was no Czech in the singles competition at the WTA 125 event. The highest-ranked player in the pool was China’s Zhang Shuai, against whom the later winner Kalinin successfully played her quarterfinal match.
The latter had earlier defeated the home tennis players – first Carole Monnet and then Jenny Lim. In the semi-finals, the Ukrainian, who is ranked 47th in the world, defeated Russia’s Blinkova.
In the title match, Anhelina Kalinina challenged 19-year-old Clara Tauson of Denmark. 115. the world number one player successively eliminated Kristina Mladenovic of France, Marta Kostyukova of Ukraine, Varvara Grachova of Russia and Lucia Bronzetti of Italy on her way to the final.
The final competition was evenly matched, so it was a long one, lasting two hours and eighteen minutes. It was decided in the third set and the final result of the match was 6::3, 5::7 and 6::4 for the native of Nova Kachovka.
The winner of sixteen ITF tournaments won for the first time on the most prestigious circuit. At the same time, she should move up to 39th in the singles world rankings. Her final opponent will appear in the top 100 in the new edition of the WTA rankings, at No. 96.
The Ukrainian tennis player celebrated a doubles championship before that. The aforementioned 20-year-old Kostyukova faced Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls of Great Britain in the title match alongside Georgia’s Oxana Kalashnikova.
Both pairs, by the way, defeated pairs representing the Czech Republic in the semi-final stage. The former duo went through Anastasia Dețiucová playing with Blinkova, while the British women went through Renata Voráčová, whose teammate was Frenchwoman Jessika Ponchetová.
The tennis players from Eastern Europe conquered the final after two different partial results. Kalashnikova and Kostyukova won against Barnett and Nicholls after sets 7::5 and 6::1.
