The semi-final matches will be played on Saturday afternoon in Newport, USA. One of them will be a derby between two French tennis players who are only two positions apart on the ATP rankings. Who will be happy to advance to the final?

Ugo Humbert celebrated his 25th birthday in June. He is currently ranked 40th on the ATP rankings, but his career high is 25th in June 2021.

This year, he has dominated the clay challengers in Cagliari and Bordeaux. Otherwise, however, he did not fare too well, falling in the second round to Lorenzo Songe at the French Open. The Italian won after sets 6:4, 6:3 and 7:6.

He was expected to do better on grass, but had to leave Wimbledon after the first round. At the most famous tennis tournament in the world, he lost to Jason Kubler in a five-set battle.

But Humbert improved his performance in Newport. In his opening match he took out the home team’s Johnson, then put a stop to the returning Kevin Anderson. The Frenchman hasn’t lost a set so far.

He will face his compatriot Adrian Mannarino on Saturday. The thirty-five-year-old is already 38th on the ATP rankings, but he is still waiting for his debut trophy this year. At Wimbledon, he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

In Newport, he found the recipe for an opening match against Hijikata, whom he defeated 6:3 and 6:4 in less than two hours. He then played against Thompson and in the second set the Frenchman was already leading 5: 2 and was one game away from advancing.

However, he lost the second set in a tiebreak and the advancing player had to be decided in the third set. Mannarino won it 6:2, but it cost him a lot of physical strength, which he may lack in the next stage of the tournament.

The last time the two players met at the French Open in May, Humbert won in three sets. Here a more even contest is expected, but I still favour the younger of the two tennis players. Humbert’s big weapon will be his great serve.
