Conor McGregor has been recovering for almost a year from his last fight, when he badly broke his leg in a fight with Dustin Poirier. UFC boss Dana White has now brought forward the date of his return and outlined a potential opponent.
Although UFC boss Dana White will not be attending the tournament in Singapore, where Moravian fighter Jiri Prochazka will fight for the title, he is by no means shying away from media duties. On the contrary.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, he spoke briefly about the future of Irish star Conor McGregor, who has been working on his comeback for almost a year.
McGregor has lost three of his last four fights, the last two coming against Dustin Poirier, both of which he lost. The first by KO, the second by TKO when the Irishman broke his leg on Poirier’s shin at the end of the first round.
It was originally planned that the Irish star could return to action in the summer, but information from the last few weeks makes it clear that this will not be the case. White himself has already hinted that he is counting on a rather late return for his favourite.
And now he has confirmed his words, revealing that McGregor could return to action at the end of this year or early next year. White went on to add that the Irishman is getting better.
In addition, he responded to speculation about a possible McGregor fight with Jorge Masvidal, saying that he has a rather different name running through his head for the Irishman’s return. He can reportedly envision him fighting former three-time Bellator champion Michael Chandler.
This duel also makes sense to him in terms of the ranking status of both fighters. While McGregor is the No. 8 lightweight, Chandler is No. 5 after his win over Tony Ferguson.
