Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane. Quite possibly the most anticipated fight of 2023. The former hasn’t fought in over three years and is seen as the best fighter in MMA history. If it weren’t for a disqualification and one forfeit, he would boast a record of 28-0.
For a change, Gane is the last heavyweight title challenger, however, he failed to defeat the injured Francis Ngannou. Ngannou was able to beat him with one knee, and he did so by using wrestling and delivering takedowns for the first time ever in the UFC.
And if he could get Ngannou to the ground, Jones should have no problem at all. The question is how the three-year layoff will affect Jones. But in terms of quality, he should have the edge over his opponent.
Plus, Gane has publicly stated that he’s too lazy to train. It may be a mental game, but even if it is, Jones should be better either way. More experienced. More complex. But more importantly, he can be expected to be much hungrier.
He may have more money, but he’s going to heavyweight for the motivation and the challenge. Moreover, after a long break, he will want to show himself in a great light and will therefore definitely go for the win.
If Gane could win, it would be a sensation. However, apart from a well struck one punch, there is virtually no way he could do it. Rather, it will be interesting to see how long the fight actually lasts.
In his last few fights, Jones has liked to control the fight on points. Now, he may very well want to go the other way for the quickest possible finish. A bet on less than 4.5 rounds at 2.19 odds may be worth a sin.
