the English Football Association will have to pay €30,000 as a fine for the behaviour of its fans during the Euro semi-final against Denmark. They booed during the national anthem before the match and used lasers to glare at Danish players, including Kasper Schmeichel, before the penalty.

The English national football team defeated Denmark 2-1 after extra time in the semi-final match of the European Championship. The winning goal was scored by Harry Kane when he finished his own shot from a penalty kick, which was saved by Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

He was, according to available footage, dazzled by a laser from the stands before the penalty kick. It was because of this foul and the booing during the Danish anthem that the English were penalised.

It has to be said that it was the drowning out of the opponents’ anthems in this inappropriate way that English fans had already demonstrated in previous matches.

In the context of the punishment that the Hungarians received for the behaviour of their fans at the Euros, the fine for England seems insignificant.

Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó also complained about it, saying it felt like the Communist era.

The Hungarians have been fined €100,000 and, crucially, had their stadium closed for two games for alleged racism during group games. If UEFA had followed the same procedure in the case of the English, Sunday’s final might have been played in front of empty stands.
