Jose Mourinho has failed in his appeal against UEFA over his conduct towards referee Anthony Taylor, who officiated the Europa League final between Sevilla and AS Roma. Thus, the punishment for him and AS Rome remains in place.

The Europa League final at the end of the 2022/23 season caused quite a controversy, mainly due to the performance of referee Anthony Taylor.

He faced criticism after the match not only from AS Roma fans, but also from Mourinho himself. In any case, it was a drama that had to be decided by a penalty shootout. And Sevilla’s players were more successful in it.

Mourinho complained especially about the situation with Erik Lamela, who finished the match without a single yellow card despite several harsh tackles.

It is also worth mentioning the unwanted hand of one of the Sevilla defenders in the penalty area, after which AS Roma could have played a penalty.

“We are extremely tired. Killed by the feeling that we lost unfairly. It was an intense game with a referee who looked like a Spaniard. The unfairness is shown by the fact that Lamela should have had a second yellow but didn’t get it and then converted the penalty,” Football-Italia quoted the Portuguese strategist as saying after the game.

However, in addition to his peppery remarks in his answers to journalists, Mourinho was also spotted in the car park afterwards, where he cursed at referee Taylor. His behaviour was caught on camera.

For this, Mourinho received a four-match ban from UEFA. He subsequently tried to appeal against it, but the disciplinary committee rejected it on Thursday afternoon.

Rome’s appeal was similarly rejected, so his punishment of a €55,000 fine and a ban on the sale of tickets for future UEFA matches for lighting pyrotechnics, throwing objects on the pitch and other disorderly conduct in Budapest remains in place.
