UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against England. Fans could have caused Schmeichel permanent damage, says expert
England certainly cannot be denied that they deservedly advanced from the semi-finals. However, the way they did it, they turned millions of fans around the world against them. The whole situation has now been taken up by UEFA.
England certainly cannot be denied that they deservedly advanced from the semi-finals. However, the way they did it, they turned millions of fans around the world against them. The whole situation has now been taken up by UEFA.
Firstly, the arrogant English media, who before the match against Denmark claimed that England were already in the final. Then the disrespectful booing of the fans during the opponents’ anthem, all culminating in the winning goal.
There were in fact two balls on the pitch at one point, plus Raheem Sterling made a significant drop pass in the whitewash, but the referee still awarded a penalty. On that one, Albion fans laser-lighted goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in the eyes to unsettle him. With all this, England pitted almost the entire footballing public against each other yesterday.
And UEFA didn’t stay quiet either. It has already opened disciplinary proceedings against England on several issues.
Allegations against England::
1) The use of a laser by its fans – Article 16(2)(D) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR)
2) Disruption by its supporters during the national anthem – Art. 16(2)(G) DR
3) Pyrotechnics – Art. 16(2)(C) DR
The most serious offence appears to be pointing a laser at Kasper Schmeichel’s eyes during a penalty kick.
The seriousness of the problem of pointing a laser at the eyes was described by eye doctor and specialist Robert Josephburg. “In many cases it can have huge consequences and there is a real risk of causing at least temporary and possibly permanent damage to a person’s eyesight,” says Josephburg.
