Only two weeks remain until the start of the favourite event for the top eight players on the ATP circuit. Who’s the next certain entrant? And which players can still qualify ATP Finals?
The 2023 ATP Tour is coming to a close. Among the biggest draws of the period is the Paris Masters, which is next week. And then, of course, the ATP Finals.
This traditional event bears the official name of the Nitto ATP Finals and takes place in Turin, Italy. The main characteristic of this event is the participation of only the top eight tennis players on the ATP rankings.
Djokovic or Alcaraz are among the qualified players. In addition to Italian Sinner, Russia’s Medvedev will also play in Turin and his compatriot has now secured his participation.
Another Russian in the party
With his progress over Italian Arnaldi in Vienna, Andrey Rublyov became the fifth certain participant in the ATP Finals. The 26-year-old will play among the top eight players for the fourth time in a row.
Last year he achieved his best result in Turin. He played in the semi-finals. He beat Medvedev and Tsitsipas in the main group. And the Greek is one of the other candidates for one of the last vacancies.
Tsitsipas and the other contenders
Stefanos Tsitsipas came close to participating in the ATP Finals by advancing past Tomas Machac. He was not born easily at all. Machac was far from scalping the Greek favourite.
“I will fight until my last breath on the court to qualify for Turin,” the Greek underlined his motivation to the Erste Bank Open website. On Friday, he will face Croatian Gojo, the surprise of Vienna.
Meanwhile, the other candidate for a position among the top eight tennis players in the world also continues his tournament in Vienna. It is Alexander Zverev. Holger Rune is again trying to raise his form with Boris Becker by his side to also make an appearance at the ATP Finals. He’s playing in Basel.
There are others breathing down the necks of the aforementioned players, but while American Fritz and Casper Ruud of Norway have already finished this week, the necessary injection of points can be obtained by Pole Hurkacz. The Basel quarter-finals await him. He even won a tournament title in China recently.
Finally,
A name is a story. The line-up for the Nitto ATP Finals may not be complete yet, but just the presence of Djokovic and the recovered Alcaraz is a real attraction. Sinner will play on home soil, Medvedev is having a great year.
The fight for participation in Turin itself will be a very interesting topic in the coming days. A fight that Rubljov has already successfully completed.
