Sparta Prague flew to Scotland with hopes of getting a good result against Rangers, which will help them to qualify for the spring part of the Europa League. However, the match was a disaster, the team lost 0:2 and said goodbye to the Europa League.
Sparta was not a clear underdog, it should have been an even match. However, it didn’t look like it on the pitch. Rangers clearly outplayed Sparta and two individual mistakes cost them the match. The home team won 2: 0 and secured the second promotion place.
Rangers rushed Sparta and were happy after a quarter of an hour. Hagi was able to pass the ball on the edge of the big white space, where the great goal scorer Alfredo Morelos was standing, unguarded. He had such an easy job and scored the opening goal.
Rangers kept the rest of the first half in check. They were able to attack, but there were no chances on either side. The half ended 1-0 to the home side.
Three minutes into the second half, the score was 2-0. Panak sent a lob in his own corner, which Morelos jumped on and headed the ball into the net. A huge mistake destroyed Sparta. From then on, she made a lot of mistakes in the midfield and nothing went right.
Rangers didn’t add another goal even though they were creating chances. Sparta Prague only got pressure towards the end of the game, but it didn’t result in a goal.
Losing by two goals means that Sparta can no longer overtake Rangers in the table, as they only won the opening game 1: 0. They are in third place, which is not bad. It secures promotion to at least the spring part of the European Conference League.
But they have to be careful. Their last match is on 9 December against Brondby, who are in last place but only 2 points behind the Prague team. However, if Sparta does not lose, they will play Europe in the spring.
