The Australian Open has started, and on the first day we could see three Czech representatives, namely Jiri Vesely, Tereza Martincova and Barbora Krejcikova. The men’s representative unfortunately fell, but the women advanced convincingly.
First on the agenda was Jiri Vesely’s match against Stefan Kozlov, an American tennis player of Russian origin. The Czech was quite a big favourite, but he failed to play his part.
After two and a half hours it was over, Kozlov won 3::0, winning 7::5, 6::3 and 6::4. Vesely thus bids farewell to the tournament in Melbourne.
After the disappointment came the pleasure of the tennis players. First up was Tereza Martincova, only she was the favourite in the duel with Lauren Davis, there is a 43rd position difference between them in the WTA rankings.
Martincova confirmed her role, she won the first set 7::5 and the second 6::2, thus enjoying a valuable 2::0 progress on sets. However, she will not be the favourite in the next match, on Wednesday she will face Camilla Giorgi, who is 14 places higher in the rankings.
Barbora Krejcikova was the last iron in the fire on Monday. The fourth-ranked player in the WTA rankings had no problems with Andrea Petkovic 6: 2 and 6: 0, winning 2: 0 in sets.
It was done after one hour and eight minutes, her next opponent will be Xiyu Wang, the 139th woman in the WTA rankings, so Krejcikova will be a big favourite on Wednesday.
