Slavia will face Fenerbahce Istanbul in the first round of the knockout stage of the European Conference League. What does former football striker Zdeněk Šenkeřík, who has experience with the Turkish league, think about the Turkish team?
Two of the three Czech clubs advanced from the European Cup group. Slavia finished second in the Conference League and will face Fenerbahce Istanbul in the next round, while Sparta finished third in the Europa League and was drawn with Partizan Belgrade for the spring stage of the Conference League. Only Jablonec failed to qualify.
While Sparta knows Serbia and hasn’t had the best experience in recent years, Turkey is a big unknown for Slavia. Under the article shared on our Facebook page regarding the EKL draw, Zdenek Shenkerik wrote about Fenerbahce.
“A rich neighborhood in the Asian part of Istanbul. I had the honour to play against Fenerbahce in the jersey of Malatyaspor.”
Šenkeřík worked for Malatyaspor between 2006 and 2007. In the first season, the offensive all-rounder played against Slavia, but not in the second one, as Malatyaspor was relegated to the second league while Fenerbahce played in the European Cups.
He himself has admitted in several interviews that he watches the Turkish league from time to time. Probably not only because of his time there, but also because the competition ends differently year after year. No one will be surprised if the champion from the previous season finishes tenth in the next one.
At the same time, Turkish teams are known not to prepare for their matches in the form of detailed schedules. The goal is usually clear, to score more goals than the opponent. According to Šenkeřík, such a team could be a good fit for the Susians.
“The team is vulnerable especially in tactical duties. They will catch them on that and advance. It will playa role if a stormy environment is allowed,” added Šenkeřík.
The fans will also play a role, of course. In Turkey, football fans across the board are among the European ceiling, on the other hand, Slavia will have a home rematch and play a decisive match in front of a full stand
North can be a huge advantage. It follows that both teams are hoping for an improvement in the coronavirus situation in their respective countries.
