The European Championship semi-finals are over. In the last match, Turkey celebrated their progress by beating Austria 2-1. In the previous match, the Netherlands defeated Romania and these teams will face off in the next stage of the tournament.
The Austrians made it through to the eight finals from a tough group, where they fell to France but won against both Poland and the Netherlands to become the group winner. The Turks, on the other hand, were not able to beat the Portuguese, but defeated Georgia and the Czech Republic to finish second.
The referee blew the whistle and the Turks celebrated shortly afterwards. At the end of the opening minute, Güler played a corner kick, the goalkeeper fell asleep and after several bounces the ball went to Demiral who scored the first goal of the match.
The most exciting moments in the first half were those with the yellow card. Towards the next match, the Turks Kokcu and Yüksek were actually sent off. The Austrians threatened late in the half, but Baumgartner’s attempt just missed the target.
In the second half things got more interesting. Arnautovic was perfectly free and stood alone in front of the goalkeeper, but he failed in a great opportunity, letting the Turkish goalkeeper stand out.
And when the Austrians couldn’t equalise, they got another goal. After a corner kick by Güler, Demiral got to the ball again and scored the second goal of the game with his head.
Austria didn’t give up yet and in the 66th minute they got a reduction. After a corner, Gregoritsch got the ball and gave the fans hope of advancing. But those hopes eventually vanished.
In the fifth minute Baumgartner headed accurately, but the excellent Gunok managed to clear the ball for a corner. Austria bid farewell to the tournament and Turkey celebrated their progress by taking on the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
