Tsitsipas poked the hornet’s nest: If women have equal pay, they should also wrestle to three winning sets. How do the women tennis players react?

Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas recently said that women should play three-set matches at least at Grand Slams. He defended his opinion by saying that they have the same high rewards as men. Understandably, this did not sit well with some of the star tennis players.

Without wishing to be controversial in any way, world number five men’s player Stefanos Tsitsipas suggested that women’s matches should be three-win sets like men’s. He thought that if the prizes were equal, why not the length of the matches.

“I was told that women have better stamina than men. I don’t know. Maybe they could play five-set matches. At least at the Grand Slams, I would like that,” Tsitsipasopined last week.

Most of the female tennis players left the statement unanswered, however, the first to respond to it was the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova on her Instagram. But it can’t be said that she has been very forthcoming.

She merely posted a preview of the article that Tsitsipas quoted, to which she added the tell-all smiley face. The first was downright mocking, while another ironically referred to Tsitsipas as a great thinker.

Naomi Osaka also commented on Tsitsipase’s statement after advancing to the quarterfinals in Miami: “Does she want to play nine sets? If he tries to extend my matches, I’ll extend his. He’s funny. I think it would change the structure of tennis. It would take a long time to implement. But I don’t think his proposal will go through.”

The former world number one didn’t want to be rude. She said the equal rewards are a credit to the good work of the WTA, which generates good revenue from ticket sales. Moreover, women’s tennis is balanced and it should be no different in the near future. In fact, several young stars are rising to prominence.
