Perhaps a little surprisingly, the players and coaches of Slavia wanted Fenerbahçe. Jindřich Trpišovský has never played with the Turkish club before as the coach of Slavia and right after the promotion over Union Berlin he claimed that he would like to play against Fenerbahçe.
If the players themselves were pleased with the draw, the fans were not. Fenerbahçe is an unattractive, but strong opponent with a large fan base in the eyes of most of the Susians’ supporters.
“We wanted Fenerbahçe because of their history, they are a huge club, one of the three most famous in the country. With a beautiful stadium and incredible fans. It’s abig challenge for us to meet such a big club,” Trpišovský told the club’s website.
Fenerbahce qualified for the Europa League group stage from third place in the Super Lig. It was only two points behind first-placed Besiktas. It subsequently gained six points in the group and was lucky to qualify for at least the spring phase of the Europa League.
There are some really well-known footballers running around in the Fenerbahçe squad. Mesut Özil needs no introduction, Luiz Gustavo is remembered from his successful engagement at Wolfsburg, Max Meyer was considered one of the greatest German talents of his generation.
“We’ve never played a Turkish team before, I’m really looking forward to the games. They have really great players like Sosa, Gustavo, Özil in their squad, ” continued the best coach of the last three league editions.
Trpišovský also wanted Fenerbahçe because of the great crowd that awaits Slavia (of course, if the coronavir situation in Turkey does not worsen). The fans from Asia Minor are among the best in the world.
But the Red and Whites have an ace up their sleeve. They are playing a rematch at home, which is an even bigger advantage than in the past after the away goals rule was abolished. So we can only hope that the positive tests for covid will run out by the end of February so that the players of Slavia can enjoy the full support of the Server stand.
“I’m glad that we are starting outside, in a boisterous environment and in a beautiful stadium. Thereturn leg is at home, I believe it will be a great match,” Trpišovský concluded.
