Joan Mir, the 2020 MotoGP World Champion, hasn’t had many happy moments in the last few months. He has failed to finish six of the last nine grand prix this season. And after the injury he sustained after a horrific crash at the Austrian Grand Prix, he will add a seventh race to his stats where he will not score any points. The Spaniard will not be taking part in the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix.
Twenty-four-year-old Joan Mir will certainly not put the 2022 edition behind him. There is no debate over his talent, but a series of crashes in the European part of the season have not made his situation any easier. His latest crash at the Austrian Grand Prix, which left him with a fractured humerus near his right ankle, is not helping.
The Spaniard underwent a CT scan and an MRI which revealed damaged ligaments and bones in his right ankle. Doctors recommended that Mir be given absolute rest for the next two weeks. As a result, Mir will not race in the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix at the Misano circuit.
The MotoGP World Champion of the coronavirus-affected 2020 season is yet to undergo several examinations to assess not only the severity of the injury but also the future course of treatment. Should Mir’s ankle heal sufficiently, he will be able to take part in the Aragon Grand Prix on the weekend of 16-18 September.
It is currently unknown who will replace Mir in the saddle of the Suzuki GSX-RR. The first choice should be Sylvain Guintoli, the official test rider of the Japanese brand, which will leave the World Championship series after this season.
however, the 40-year-old Frenchman suffered an injury to his left hand in a test ride for the eight-hour race at Suzuka. However, other Suzuki test rider Takuya Cuda or two-time MotoGP race winner Danilo Petrucci are still in the mix.
Mir is currently in 12th place overall with 77 points. Although his future has been linked to a place on the Honda factory team, his form now unfortunately does not suggest that he can compete in any way with his potential teammate, eight-time world champion Marc Márquez.
