The nervousness is slowly rising among world golf fans. The 2021/22 PGA Tour season is rushing to a close, with the last stretch of the season ahead of it. The Tour Championship kicks off Thursday at Atlanta’s now-legendary East Lake Golf Club, concluding the three-tournament series of the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs. Who will reach the fabulous $18 million purse? Let’s take a look!
The private East Lake Golf Club course is already a staple of the PGA Tour’s peak season. Since 2007, when the elimination playoff format has been played, Atlanta has always hosted the final chapter of the American circuit.
The course is famous for its erratic greens around the fairways and unusually fast, yet undulating greens. In the end, only the top twenty-nine players who have withstood the rigours of elimination in recent weeks will go into battle for the FedEx Cup trophy.
Will Zalatoris, who withdrew during the final round at the BMW Championship due to injury, has withdrawn from the Tour Championship.
Again this year, players and fans can look forward to the so-called Starting Strokes format, where the top-ranked player will start on a score of -10. The advantage of starting line standing has determined the overall FedEx Cup standings from the entire year so far.
The weather forecast does give players and organisers a bit of a scare as heavy rain is expected to fall at the venue throughout the week. However, thanks to the narrow starting field, the organizers are confident that they will be able to run the tournament on the expected schedule.
WHO IS THE FAVOURITE AND WHAT IS AT STAKE?
On paper, we would be hard pressed to find a bigger favourite to win than American-born, New Jersey-based Scottie Scheffler. The world number one has literally had a dream season, earning him a luxurious starting score of -10 to start the tournament.
Moreover, he showed at the end of the BMW Championship that he is probably ready for the battle of nerves in the title fight. After all, remember the Maters, which he handled fantastically, with complete composure. The odds on this guy winning are also just 3.40, which is a really low number in golf.
Just behind Scheffler at odds of 5.00 is Patrick Cantlay, who dominated the last BMW Championship. He enters the tournament at eight shots under par, a better score than the vast majority of the starting field will have at the start of the Tour Championship.
The American media has traditionally ranked Rory McIlroy as one of the favourites, but when he has been tipped to win a major in recent weeks, he has failed to live up to expectations.
Australian Cameron Smith will be a man to watch, having missed the BMW Championship, but he will still be one of the biggest favourites. He will run out onto the East Lake course in Atlanta four shots under par, with odds of 26.00 on him to win the FedEx Cup. Among Czech tipsters, 7% of users trust him.
