The Scots fought for their first win at the European Championships in twenty-eight years against Switzerland. In Cologne, the spectators saw a hard-fought game and a 1-1 draw. So the Scots have to wait and see.

The Scots for zero, the Swiss for three. That was the score going into their second Group A match against opponents from countries known for their harsh mountain conditions. And even their duel was tough, especially from the Scots.

The players from the British Isles were trying to make up for their opening high score loss to Germany (1:5), in which their defender Porteous was also sacked. Their Wednesday opponent was more at ease, after a 3: 1 triumph over Hungary the Swiss didn’t have to push themselves.

The Ostrians started better and their activity resulted in an own goal by Newcastle stopper Fabian Schär. The Scots took the lead in the 13th minute. However, they didn’t celebrate for long, as Xherdan Shaqiri equalised thirteen minutes later with a beautiful shot after a misplaced ball.

In the 32nd minute, the Swiss also put on a great display, combining with Gunn in a matter of seconds. Vargas crossed for Ndoye, but he shot over. Then, a few dozen seconds later, Ndoye’s goal was taken away by an offside.

The Scots weren’t afraid to play hard

The Scots were fighting for their first win at the European Championships since 1996 and before half-time Adams tried to give them the lead back, but after a corner McTominay did not beat Sommer. Then Slovakian referee Kružliak blew his whistle and it was off to the booths.

Murat Yakin’s charges could have taken the lead in the 58th minute, but Ndoye failed to beat Gunn after a superb shutdown of his Scottish opponent. Then Tierney was badly injured and had to be replaced by McKenna.

The Islanders came close to scoring the lead after a beautifully played standard from Robertson, which Grant Hanley only hit the bar. The Cologne stadium then saw several crude saves, with Aston Villa midfielder McGinn in particular excelling. Embol’s goal was then ruined by an offside.

There was no more to be seen. The Swiss will play their last group game against Germany and the Scots will play the Hungarians. The home team won their match 2:0.
