Tottenham won their opening game of the new season, beating Southampton 4-1 at home. They had to finish the game after James Ward-Prowse scored a wonderful goal. Who scored for the home side?
The opening was very cautious from both sides and offered only hints of chances. The goal was scored in the 12th minute out of nowhere. James Ward-Prowse shot from outside the box and gave Hugo Lloris no chance.
Southampton couldn’t enjoy the lead for long. Tottenham pressed and equalised in the 21st minute. Dejan Kulusevski’s beautiful centre found the onrushing Ryan Sessegnon, who from the first flicked the visitors’ goalkeeper.
Nine minutes later, Heung Min Son burned a great chance and by the 30th minute the stadium was celebrating. The Korean striker’s header was cleared by Eric Dier. Son was the man of the match in the first half, but he couldn’t find the back of the net. Just before the break, he shot over the bar after a fine individual effort.
Sessegnon scored for the second time in the game, but his goal was disallowed for offside. In the 60th minute, the home side were already celebrating a regulation goal when Emerson Royal’s shot was knocked into his own net by Mohamed Salisu.
And two minutes later, the visitors’ hopes were definitely over as Kulusevski headed to the far post.
Southampton were treading water after that, looking to finish the game as soon as possible and ideally without injury. The last quarter didn’t offer any more chances and the game ended 4-1.
