The fans at the Etihad Stadium in the blue part of Manchester witnessed a breathtaking spectacle on Saturday night when two more goals fell in the set-up with Tottenham 1: 2. Firstly, Riyad Mahrez equalised from a penalty in the ninety-second minute, only for Harry Kane to decide the victory for the London team three minutes later.
The captain of the English national team scored two goals in the match and showed why Manchester City have been craving for him for some time now. It is a bit of a paradox, then, that it was Harry Kane, who had one foot in the Etihad Stadium last summer, who offered Liverpool a chance to make up the points deficit to table leader Manchester City.
The result of Saturday’s match evokes for many fans the 2019 Champions League quarter-final, when Tottenham eliminated Manchester City thanks to more goals scored on the opponent’s pitch (1: 0, 3: 4 from Tottenham’s point of view). In addition, the team from London won after three league losses in a row.
The interesting thing about Saturday’s game was that City had 71% of the ball possession in the match, outshot Tottenham 21::6, won 10::0 on corners, yet this territorial superiority was of no use to the Manchester players. This match confirmed the old saying. Football is played for goals.
Now it’s Liverpool’s turn, who turned the result against Norwich on Saturday and won 3: 1. They are currently 6 points behind the leaders Citizens, but they have a postponed game against Leeds United, which will be played next Wednesday, February 23, at Liverpool’s Anfield Road.
The Premier League still has 12, or 13 in Liverpool’s case, games to go. If Liverpool can make it through Wednesday’s playoff against Leeds, the fight for the English championship could become even more exciting.
Liverpool still have tough games at Arsenal, at home to Ronaldo’s Manchester United, West Ham, a derby with Everton and also against Harry Kane’s Tottenham. They will also play an away game at Manchester City’s stadium of all places.
Manchester City will have a home derby with United, as well as a home game with Liverpool and an away game with Soucek’s West Ham.
At first glance, the lot seems to favour City, but Premier League matches are often unpredictable. The last team can beat the first. However, if both teams perform as expected, the title could be decided by the match at the Etihad Stadium. In the autumn, the two rivals drew 2-2 at Anfield Road.
