A number of star footballers have come through Spain’s Atlético Madrid, and it’s hard to single out the best of them. Nevertheless, we’ve tried and in this article we bring you the five best players in Atlético Madrid’s history.
Fernando Torres
This Spanish striker was guaranteed a place on this list. Fernando Torres started his career at Atlético Madrid, from where he left after seven years to the Premier League. However, Atlético left such a mark on him that he decided to end his top career at the club after foreign engagements. And no wonder, the local fans can’t let him go and he has rightly become a legend of the club.
Fernando Torres played a total of 321 competitive matches for Atlético Madrid, scoring 109 goals. The quick-footed striker has long been a mainstay of the national team, in which he has played 110 games. In these he scored 38 goals.
Diego Godín
Long-time captain and mainstay of Atlético Madrid’s back line. The Uruguayan stopper has made a total of 277 competitive starts for the club and his reliability has earned him the respect of Madrid fans and beyond.
Godín has also led the team to a number of successes, including the Spanish title and Super Cup and two Europa League victories. However, he failed to win the most famous Champions League, the maximum being two second places in 2014 and 2016.
Gabi
Another former captain, Gabi used to play as a defensive midfielder. He consistently fulfilled both defensive and attacking duties, prompting his teammates into goal scoring positions. And even though he didn’t score many goals, his contribution to the team in building the attack was huge.
Luis Aragonés
Luis Aragonés went through several Spanish clubs, but he left his biggest mark at Atlético Madrid. He even held the title of the club’s all-time top scorer for a long time, but he was recently replaced at the top of that statistic by Antoine Griezmann.
After his playing career ended, Luis Aragonés had an equally rich coaching career. He went through Atlético, Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia and even led the national team for four years. He finished his coaching career at Fenerbahce, which was also his only foreign engagement.
Antoine Griezmann
As mentioned above, he is currently Atlético Madrid’s top scorer. Apart from his beginnings at Real Sociedad and a three-year engagement at Barcelona, he has played his entire career at Atlético. And he is still playing there now.
He is a goal-scoring striker with a brilliant football mind. He demonstrates this to the full at club and national level, dominating the 2018 World Cup with the French national team, taking silver at the previous major tournament. Griezmann is currently playing in great form and is expected to remain at Atlético for years to come.
