The tournament in Madrid belongs to the Masters category and its programme fills two weeks. So you won’t find any fresh winners in our selection today. However, there are more than enough candidates for the top positions.

Mirra Andreeva

The sixteen-year-old tennis player advanced to the top sixteen at the biggest tennis event in Spain. She flew headlong into the tournament. She beat three quality opponents without losing a set.

She says she enjoys being part of such a tennis event. She especially appreciates all the stars in the vicinity. She’s bumping into Andy Murray, but her closest encounter is with women’s number two Aryna Sabalenka. She’ll play her in the next eight finals.

Carlos Alcaraz

We write about him a lot because the Madrid Open would be half as good without him. He gets the crowd going, puts on a real show. He took the serve from Bulgarian Dimitrov four times, lost his only once and is in the eighth round of the prestigious sporting event.

It’s impossible not to look forward to the next rounds, where the Spaniard will meet the really good ones. Names like Alexander Zverev or (possibly) Andrey Rublyov now stand in his way of a coveted defence in Madrid.

Dusan Lajovic

He didn’t have much time to celebrate his triumph on the ATP circuit after four years. He had to rush from Banja Luka to the Spanish capital and here he is definitely not in the numbers.

The Serbian tennis player calmly passed the Australian Kubler and then after a fight over the Canadian Auger-Aliassime. That’s already a great result, you don’t beat a world number nine every day. The FC Barcelona fan now boasts seven wins in a row. How many more will he add?

Barbora Krejcikova

One of two Czech winners of this year’s WTA Masters. The other, Petra Kvitova, is already eliminated in Madrid. Like all the other Czech tennis players. The native of Brno is the last one to hold the Czech flag in the game.

Barbora Krejcikova has so far defeated both Montenegro’s Kovinic and China’s Wang Xiu. Both from the second half of the WTA top 100. There are definitely tougher obstacles to come. Our player will face Croatia’s Marticova in the eighth round, followed by world number one Iga Swiatek.

Aslan Karacev

Perhaps a surprising name to end with. Currently the 121st player in the world is not having a very successful season. He has never really made a mark in Masters tournaments. But we must add the proverbial BUT.

The native of Vladikavkaz has also already shown what he can do. He reached the semi-finals of the 2021 Australian Open, where he was stopped by Novak Djokovic. The biggest argument for the 29-year-old Russian, however, is his results here in Madrid this year.

He started here in qualifying and has already won four matches without losing a set. And winning the last one so far is worth quite a lot. Aslan Karacev recorded it against the Dutch Van De Zandschulp, the finalist from the previous week.
