Top 5 leagues and their battle for the championship: Bayern and PSG’s titles are almost decided, Premier League and Serie A promise drama
The league season is in its middle. It is very clear which teams can still fight for the title and which teams have no chance at all. In some competitions the title is even 90% decided (Ligue 1 and Bundesliga). On the other hand, the English Premier League or the Italian Serie A offer a thrilling battle for the title.
The league season is in its halfway point. It is very clear which teams can still fight for the title and which teams have no chance at all. In some competitions the title is even 90% decided (Ligue 1 and Bundesliga). On the other hand, the English Premier League or the Italian Serie A offer a thrilling battle for the title.
The Premier League king will be decided between Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea
Already before the season, these teams were among the biggest favourites for the title. So far, everything is going according to paper. Manchester City can rely on the tremendous quality of all positions and a well-balanced squad. Liverpool have Salah playing in the form of his life, the Reds have been helped by the return of Van Dijk. Chelsea rely on confident defensive play and great tactical manoeuvres from coach Tuchel.
After the 19th round, only 6 points separate this aforementioned trio. The title race is wide open. Manchester City is the leader of the competition. With nine wins in a row, it has moved into a slight lead. Liverpool and Chelsea, on the other hand, have both notched up a few losses.
In the coming period, these teams will have to do without their key players. It will be interesting to see how they cope with these absences. Manchester City is the biggest favourite for the title, coach Guardiola’s team is in excellent form. If they can maintain this performance, they will win their 4th league title in the last 5 years.
Bayern are once again unbeatable
The Bundesliga’s autumn league season was as expected. Once again Bayern reigns supreme, with the German giant boasting a nine-point lead over second-placed Dortmund. The ageless Lewandowski (19 goals) is in fine form. Dortmund and Leverkusen are also suffering from uneven performances, while Leipzig are the disappointment of the season. It’s practically decided now. Bayern are heading for another defence and a 10th title in a row.
Real Madrid’s dominant run
Last season’s title battle? A very thrilling duel, with Atlético Madrid and Real only decided in the last round. Coach Diego Simeone’s side eventually became champions. For Atlético it was a great thing, they achieved their first title in 8 years.
This season, it won’t be as evenly matched. The defending champion is suffering from an uneven performance. Barcelona has lost Lionel Messi, it is starting a new era, the financial situation of the club is not good. In its case, the drop in performance is perfectly understandable.
The weakened competition is being used to great effect by Real Madrid, which is absolutely sovereign this season. 19 games, 46 points. The leader of the competition is basking in 1st place with a luxurious 8 points lead over second-placed Sevilla. The White Ballet have made a great change in the midfield (Militao and Alaba have perfectly replaced Ramos and Varane).
Excellent performances by the ageless Modric and Kroos, and a productive Benzema in attack. Vinicius Junior is having a renaissance. The return of Carlo Ancelotti to the Real bench was also a big positive. Unless Benzema and co. are hit by some kind of performance crisis, the title should no longer elude Real Madrid.
A balanced Serie A
In the Italian league, on the other hand, the jury is still out. Inter Milan is the leader after half of the competition (46 points), but AC Milan is on its back (4 points behind). A big clash between two irreconcilable rivals is looming. AC Milan has been waiting for the title for 11 years.
With 39 points, Naples is in third place, only one point worse off is fourth-placed Atalanta. However, these teams have neither the quality nor the performance. Sooner or later they are likely to drop out of the title race. It is therefore to be expected that the battle for the Italian king will be between Inter and AC Milan.
The defending champion is the bigger favourite. However, AC should not be underestimated, plus they have Zlatan. the 40-year-old Ibrahimovic is still firing sharply, he is capable of shooting that dream title all by himself.
PSG are heading for another title
Lille were the unexpected champions last season, winning their first league title in 10 years. French side Paris Saint-Germain failed to do so unexpectedly. This season, however, it doesn’t look like a surprise anymore. The French hegemon has strengthened brutally during the summer (the arrival of Hakimi, Wijnaldum, Donnarumma, Ramos and Messi).
The quality of the team is immense. The performances of Messi and co. may not be that shining, but the fluctuating performance will not dampen their chances of winning the title. PSG have already won 46 points, with Nice 13 points ahead of second place. Another title is on the way, the failure of last season will not be repeated.
