The respected Deloitte.com server has compiled a ranking of twenty clubs according to their revenue for the 2022/2023 season. Although the Premier League has the most teams in the ranking, Real Madrid from Spain dominated the ranking.
Despite the global crisis last year, the total revenue generated by the top 20 football clubs was the highest in its history. At least that’s the information provided by Deloitte, which publishes an independent analysis of the top-earning clubs in world football every year.
In fact, in the 2022/2023 season, the revenues of these clubs exceeded the magic threshold of 10 billion euros. Crossing this threshold represented a 14% increase over the previous best seasons, when the top 20 clubs earned €9.2 billion (2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons).
The earnings figure includes revenue from matches, TV broadcasts and commercial activities. In particular, revenues from matches themselves were record high (€1.9 billion), mainly due to the opening of stadiums to full capacity after the end of the pandemic. Logically, the demand from fans for a direct experience in the stadiums was huge.
Clubs also generated record commercial revenues (€4.4 billion). In this respect, 17 out of the 20 clubs mentioned recorded an increase, which can be attributed to better retail sales or the renewal of sponsorship contracts, which had been affected by the pandemic in previous years.
Thus, the lowest growth (5%) was in the sphere of television broadcasts. However, the German, Italian and French top leagues in particular recorded relatively comparable gains to previous years. This was mainly due to the increase in the value of the Premier League’s international broadcasting rights.
Real Madrid dominated the rankings, with City second with record revenues
The football club generating the highest revenues last season was Real Madrid. Its revenues of €831 million marked an increase of €118 million on the previous year. It thus became number one in the rankings for the first time since the 2017/18 season, which is mainly attributed to the club’s sovereignly highest commercial profits.
Although Manchester City had a record season with revenues of €826 million, it still had to bow out to the Madrid giant. Even so, this is a very high figure, mainly due to a successful campaign in the domestic league and the Champions League, which boosted broadcasting and commercial revenues.
For the first time in the club’s history, Paris Saint-Germain broke into the top three teams in this statistic. With revenues of €802 million, it overtook fourth-placed Barcelona (with revenues of €800 million) for the second consecutive year. The Parisian club posted a year-on-year increase of €148 million, thanks in large part to its investment in commercial subsidiary Ligue de Football Professional.
Liverpool then recorded the biggest drop from the previous period, moving from 3rd to 7th place. It was one of only three clubs in the top 20 (alongside Atlético de Madrid and West Ham United) to see a drop in revenue compared to the previous season.
