Tomáš Vaclík has another engagement after Olympiakos in Greece! This time he will capture the second English top flight competition as he moves to Huddersfield. The task is clear, to help this club to save. What did the goalkeeping coach say about him?
The January transfer window is fast approaching its end and clubs are still in a hurry to get the coveted reinforcements that will help them get better results in the rest of the current season.
And in Huddersfield’s case, it will be a big deal. The club is currently 26 points adrift of the twenty-second position in the league table, with only a one-point lead over last-placed Wigan.
So it is logical that Huddersfield have engaged a goalkeeper to help them save the second league – Tomas Vaclik. But in addition, the club had to respond to the injury of goalkeeper Nicholls.
“First of all, I felt really touched when I spoke to Paul Clements, the goalkeeping coach, who has a really great reputation among us goalkeepers,” Vaclik said after joining Huddersfield.
“He said really kind words about me, that he was looking forward to working with me. I’ve heard a lot of good things about him and he was one of the main reasons I wanted to come here,” he added.
Coach Mark Fotheringham’s statement
“I’m happy to have Tomas with us and I’m sure he will play a very important role for the rest of the season. Tomas has played regularly at top club and international level so he brings invaluable experience to our team,” said the Huddersfield head coach in an interview with the club website.
Vaclik will thus add another address to his footballing CV. After Viktoria Zizkov, Sparta, Basel, Sevilla and Olympiakos, the Czech national goalkeeper will don his sixth jersey.
He left for Greece in the summer of 2021 after losing his number one spot at Sevilla, which was taken away from him by Moroccan Yassine Bono. He was the clear number one at Olympiakos last season, netting 32 league games and 10 in the Europa League.
At the start of the current season, everything was still in top form. Vaclik started again as Olympiakos’ number one, scoring in five league games, two in the Champions League qualifiers and six in the Europa League.
Last September he went to the Czech national team meeting where he got 4 goals from the Portuguese, but in the second game against Switzerland he had to substitute at half-time. A serious shoulder injury and subsequent surgery forced Vaclik to miss the rest of the autumn.
After the injury he did not return to the Olympiakos goal and it was clear that he would look for a new job. So let’s wish Tomas good luck and lots of zeroes in his new club.
