Tiger Woods and his most sacred challenge: Getting from point A to point B
Golf legend Tiger Woods played golf again. Last weekend in Orlando, USA, the darling of the public was on the course again. He competed in an exhibition tournament alongside his son Charlie against other elite players alongside their offspring or other family members. The most important finding? Tiger can still play golf. The only question is how far his health will take him.
First of all, it’s been a year since he got back on his feet after a serious car accident and has been hitting competitive balls for nine months. Nothing might have made his flow so special if he hadn’t nearly lost his leg in February 2021 and had to undergo several major surgeries to have any chance of ever walking again.
Nope. Tiger Woods’ former glory must be forgotten, willy-nilly. Combined with his endless back problems and now plantar fasciitis, it’s rather rare to see him on the field.
Still, he showed last weekend that he can still play golf: “Every day is different,” Justin Thomas said after the tournament. “He was moving really well yesterday. When he was hitting balls, you could see he was moving really well. But obviously the next day he wasn’t moving as well. I’m sure he would trade 10 yards to be able to walk every day and feel good. But it’s very impressive. I have to say he’s very strong and he looks pretty healthy right now, too,” Thomas said of Woods.
One thing hasn’t changed over the past year. It’s still crucial for Tiger Woods to be able to get around all four rounds on his own and not suffer in the process. If he can do that, he can still compete with younger competitors on the PGA Tour. The game itself is still at a high level.
A lot has happened in the past year, according to Woods: “I had back surgery the first year and last year I played with a broken leg. So this year it’s important that all the bones are lined up right again,” he told GolfWeek with exaggeration about his current state of health.
But most recently he is dealing with the aforementioned plantar fasciitis, which he is well aware is no joke: “Now I really need to recover, get better and move forward. There’s a lot I’m physically able to do,” he said, adding that he can hit a golf ball cleanly as well as practice. But the most important thing now is to be able to get from point A to point B. “We’ll work on that, of course,” he added.
It’s more than clear that everything will start with Woods taking the utmost care of his feet, which of course includes proper rest and recovery. This is also one of the reasons why we won’t see the 50-year-old Tiger on the field as often in December.
He said a few weeks ago that he would like to play at least all four major tournaments next season and, if his health allows, add a few more. The number one goal is to appear at the traditional Masters in early April.
But it is equally important to reiterate the hard fact that after dozens of surgeries and a serious car accident, golf is no longer the main thing that interests Tiger Woods in life.
