As the American Grand Slam comes to the end of its first week, we bring you a recap of the day’s play. Thursday’s program offered a continuation of Andreas Seppi’s fabulous campaign or the advancement of two more Czech women to the third round.
Let’s start with the men again. The 37-year-old player, whose career is coming to an end, took on Hurkacz and after winning 3: 1 in sets, he will face the German Oscar Otte.
Kazakhstan’s Bublik was eliminated from the seeded players, but was not able to beat Jack Sock. The American, who until recently was completely missing from the singles rankings, won after a huge five-set battle and can only surprise against Alexander Zverev.
Among the women, there was the Czech derby, mentioned several times, which was better handled by the better of the Czech pair, Petra Kvitová. She broke Kristýna Pliskova by winning the first set, which the world number 11 won in a shortened game. After that, the Czech lioness won 6:2 in the second set and in the third round she will face Maria Sakkariová.
Kristýna’s sister Karolína had to work hard in the evening match against the American Anisimova. After winning the opening set by 7::5, Pliskova went into a tiebreak with the home player in the second act, but that only brought one service hold from Pliskova and the shortened game went to Anisimova.
The third set even brought a match point for the American player in the next tiebreak, but the Czech fended it off on her serve and despite being down 2:5 and 6:7, managed to turn the match around and advance to the third round.
Unexpectedly, Krejcikova and Siniakova ended their doubles career in the first round, losing in two sets to the Linett/Pera pair. On the other hand, Hradecka and Bouzkova and Vondroušová and Martinsová advanced to the next round.
