Throwing money away? Not exactly! Who did Newcastle bring in during the winter transfer window?
New owners, new era. Newcastle spent the most money of any European team in the winter transfer window, £102m. Who will we see running around in black and white on English turf in the spring?
New owners, new era. Newcastle spent the most money of any European team in the winter transfer window, £102m. Who will we see running around in black and white on English turf in the spring?
Bruno Guimaraes – £37.8 million
The most expensive signing for The Magpies is Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Ironically, for Newcastle fans, he is the least known player on the list of new signings, but at Sparta they remember him very well anyway. He was a defensive midfielder for Lyon and his passes took the crowd’s breath away. Now he will have to prove it in the Premier League.
Chris Wood – £27m
Chris Wood’s transfer from Burnley for nearly thirty million has sparked an avalanche of controversy. That kind of money for a 30-year-old player? That’s a lot, but Newcastle could use a similar type of striker. Wood is very strong in the air and combined with quick wingers, he could be the final piece to Eddie Howe’s jigsaw.
Kieran Trippier – £13.5m
Moving to defence, where the Magpies are pushing the boot most. England international Kieran Trippier has arrived on the right edge of the defence. Howe didn’t have anyone with steady form in that position and Trippier is the perfect patch. His excellent kicking technique will come in handy for direct kicks, but will he find the motivation after his years in the Champions League?
Dan Burn – £13.5m
An overlooked, but quite possibly the most important transfer, as Newcastle needed a new stopper the most. Dan Burn took over as the leader of Brighton’s defence after Ben White’s departure to Arsenal, and has been performing well at stopper.
The question is, has the transfer paid off for Burn himself? Graham Potter is building an interesting team on the south coast, plus Brighton are basically saved. Now the six-foot-two defender will stave off relegation.
Matt Targett – away
Alongside Newcastle, Aston Villa have also been strengthening massively. Among other things, they brought in Lucas Digne, which relegated Matt Targett to the substitute position. Howe took advantage of the situation and brought in the English midfielder on loan. A new left-back will come in handy, Jamal Lewis hasn’t convinced in the year and a half since his transfer from Norwich that he has what it takes to make the starting line-up.
