Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel spoke at the post-match press conference with Zenit St Petersburg about why his team needed a player like Belgian superstar Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea faced Zenit St. Petersburg in the opening round of the Champions League and beat them 1-0. The only goal of the match was scored by Romelu Lukaku, who decided to gain three points for his team. The win was very slim, but still important.
“We were winning even when we didn’t have Romelu, and producing good results, but he was just the type of player we were missing, it’s not just about his immense talent, it’s also about his personality,” Thomas Tuchel began his comments on the star reinforcement.
Tuchel had only words of praise for the Belgian striker: “Romelu’s performance on the pitch was not one of the easiest. We didn’t create a lot of chances for him, but fortunately he is not a player who has lost faith and confidence. That’s why he is a world-class striker, you won’t find many strikers like him.”
However, he wasn’t just talking about performances on the pitch: “He’s a very generous person. He communicates great in the locker room and creates positive energy throughout the team, so we are very proud to have him on our team. He is a personality that doesn’t lose confidence, he is at a very high professional level and we are very happy to have him with us.”
Lukaku has helped Chelsea to perform even better than last season under Thomas Tuchel. The words of praise for him are well deserved. He has been successful in helping the team in the league and now in the Champions League.
Let’s see if he will help the team enough to help Chelsea defend the Champions League title. But we are only at the beginning of the whole season, so we can only guess. Still, Chelsea are one of the big favourites to win the trophy and Lukaku is one of the biggest favourites to be the tournament’s top scorer.
