The NHL had the 61st NHL Entry Draft on Wednesday night. The number one pick was, as expected, the huge talent Connor Bedard, and the top defenseman was David Reinbacher. He was selected by Montreal, but Canadiens goalie Carey Price took a big hit during his nomination.

Forgetting the name of a drafted player can happen, plain and simple. But you probably don’t want it to happen to you in the first round and even when selecting the top defenseman in this year’s draft.

However, that’s exactly what happened to Montreal goaltender Carey Price when the Canadiens announced their first pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

Reinbacher tied the previous record held by his compatriot Thomas Vanek. He also went fifth overall in the 2003 draft and was selected in the first round by the Buffalo Sabres.

So it will be interesting to see if Reinbacher, like Vanek, fulfills his potential as one of the most talented young defensemen on the planet.

The now 39-year-old Austrian forward has had quite a successful NHL career, totaling 789 points. But he never reached the Stanley Cup.

So Reinbacher matched a player who can be described as one of the best in Austrian hockey history. And that shows how much embarrassment and moments of terror Price must have experienced in front of the microphone.

Reinbacher and his career so far

The eighteen-year-old defenceman started his professional hockey career in Switzerland and made his name in Kloten. He was already part of the team at U15, and gradually made his way up to the senior A-team before U17 and U20.

It was the 2021/22 season, Reinbacher played 27 games for Kloten. However, he had a more successful year recently, playing the bulk of the season in the Swiss outfit’s jersey and scoring 22 points. He also played at the World Championships in Tampere and Riga.
