Unfortunately, the Czech driver Roman Stanek was unsuccessful, with Ayumu Iwasa taking pole position. On the other hand, Victor Martins crashed very hard.
Japanese driver Ayumu Iwasa secured his third pole position in Formula 3 in Friday’s qualifying. The last time a DAMS driver celebrated a qualifying first place was last season, specifically in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Now at the Albert Park circuit in Australia, he was quick from the start. In the first half of the qualifying session, he was the fastest on the track.
He was then briefly overtaken by Theo Pourchaire (ART), but Iwasa snatched the top spot back.
It should be noted that the track conditions were really bad due to the heavy rain. Home favourite Jack Doohan, for example, confirmed in radio communication with his race engineer that he was struggling with significant aquaplaning.
Red flags and Martins’ accident
The first red flag was displayed after just five minutes. The slippery conditions punished several drivers. Oliver Bearman spun sideways into the wall between turns 8 and 9, while Jake Crawford damaged his front wing.
Many drivers took a trip off the track. With just under four minutes to go, Pourchaire leapfrogged his teammate by just four thousandths of a second. However, the ART driver’s third pole position in a row did not materialise. Iwasa subsequently clocked 1:45.118.
For the second time, we saw the red flags fly with about two minutes left in qualifying. In fact, Martins failed to negotiate the section of Turns 5 and 6 and crashed hard into the wall.
As far as the final results were concerned, Iwasa took pole position, followed by Pourchaire. Martins set the third fastest time before the collision. Unfortunately, Roman Stanek did not qualify well at all, finishing seventeenth with a time of 1:47.470.
