This is how Alcaraz plays! Will the Spaniard confirm his growing form in Beijing?
It cannot be said that Carlos Alcaraz went through a crisis after his Wimbledon triumph. Still, his results during the summer months were not exactly dazzling. In China, his game seems to have begun to shine again. What’s between him and a seventh title this year?
It cannot be said that Carlos Alcaraz went through a crisis after his Wimbledon triumph. Still, his results during the summer months were not exactly dazzling. In China, his game seems to have begun to shine again. What’s between him and a seventh title this year?
This year has long been characterised by a battle between Djokovic and Alcaraz for the top position on the ATP rankings and for the most valuable tournament trophies. After the spectacular gain of the legendary Wimbledon, the younger of the pair has gone a bit quiet.
Alcaraz dropped out surprisingly in the quarterfinals of the Masters in Toronto. A week later, he lost a straight-set battle with Djokovic in Cincinnati and even the semi-final defeat to Medvedev was not quite what was expected of the young Spaniard.
Now the ATP tour returns to Chinese territory and the current tournament in Beijing has attracted virtually the complete world’s top players. With the exception of Djokovic, whose absence thus gives Alcaraz a welcome opportunity to take the initiative in their duel.
And it is in the Chinese capital that the Spanish tennis player is presenting himself in an outstanding manner. He has been delighting the fans with great strokes and has already reached the semi-finals in the packed China Open.
Will his dazzling form bring him another title?
In Beijing, Alcaraz hasn’t lost a single set so far, and he has met very good opponents. After sets 6:4, 6:2 he got past world No. 18 Italian Musetti and his match against Nora Ruud brought the same result.
He is two matches away from a possible seventh title in 2023. The first one will be another clash with the Italian tennis player. That’s local number one Jannik Sinner. The Wimbledon champion is evenly matched so far this year. Each player has won one match between them.
A potential Alcaraz-Medvedev final would be a rematch of the US Open semi-final and the Spanish tennis player would have the opportunity to return the defeat from the US Open to the Russian.
In conclusion ..
It cannot be assumed that any tennis player will only win. Right now, Alcaraz seems to be back in top form. It is great that he has the opportunity to prove it in the excellent competition that gathered at the Beijing China Open.
