After Haas, Red Bull and Williams, Alfa Romeo is the next team to unveil the shape of the new monoblocs for the upcoming season! However, in addition to the new livery, the team’s technical director Jan Monchaux also explains the significant changes to the rear of the car.
Alfa Romeo unveiled the shape of the new monoposts for the 2023 season on Tuesday morning, making it the fourth team to unveil the new colouring of its cars.
Unlike Williams and Red Bull, and therefore similar to Haas, Alfa Romeo comes with a completely different colour scheme. It must be noted, the new monoblocs will look really beautiful on the track. In the attached twitter posts below you can see the new car, also compared to last year.
It should be added, Alfa Romeo still recently left title sponsor Orlen. On the monoposto we can then see the name of the new main sponsor, which is Stake. It was also confirmed a few days before the unveiling of the new car that Audi has bought a minority stake in the Swiss team Sauber.
This hasn’t been reflected in this year’s livery yet, but it’s sure to be different in the future. Indeed, this year is the last year that the Swiss stable will run under the Italian Alfa Romeo banner. For the 2024 and 2025 seasons, the team will bear its original name of Sauber, with the collaboration with the German carmaker starting in 2026.
In addition to the livery, technical changes
The look of the monoposto is one thing, but the other and more important thing is how Alfa Romeo will perform on the racetrack. This is because the stable wants to defend at least sixth place in the Constructors’ Cup next season.
As a result, the team’s technical director Jan Monchaux revealed that the car has undergone many technical changes to the suspension, gearbox, cooling layout, bodywork and other elements – all taking into account modifications to the ground clearance and diffuser.
“We identified areas where we think there is still potential that we could exploit, potential that we would not be able to exploit in the 2022 season,” Monchaux said in an interview with F1.
“We concentrated mainly on the rear of the car, where we just wanted to have the courage to take the next step in terms of pure rear development, which opened the door to many other solutions that we couldn’t implement last year,” he explained.
As well as trying to improve performance, Monchaux revealed that they also focused on engine reliability. This is precisely what has plagued Alfa Romeo over the past year.
“It also became quite clear during the season that we had reliability problems, so we changed a lot of things on the car,” he added.
Driver line-up, new management
Valtteri Bottas and Kuan-yu Zhou – the driver pairing will be the same as in the 2022 season. But things have been happening in the team’s management. The current stable boss Fred Vasseur has accepted an offer from Ferrari to replace Mattia Bottas.
Andreas Seidl then came from McLaren to take over as Sauber’s CEO, with Alessandro Alunni Bravi becoming the new team principal.
