Formula One fans are furious. Ferrari failed to file an exemption with the International Automobile Federation (FIA) regarding the penalty for Carlos Sainz and he received a penalty. However, fans of the queen of motorsport are calling this an injustice.

FIA confirms punishment for Carlos Sainz

A farce – that’s exactly how you can interpret Friday’s events in Las Vegas, especially the opening one. The first practice session was abandoned after less than nine minutes due to a lack of preparation of the circuit.

Carlos Sainz drove at high speed onto the cover of a drain, whereupon the concrete frame broke and the Spanish driver’s car was significantly damaged.

We have already covered the whole matter in detail in a previous article, and Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur was understandably very angry.

“We have a completely damaged monocoque, engine and battery. We are definitely not going to take part in FP2. I think this is totally unacceptable in today’s F1,” said an angry Vasseur.

According to the official report from the FIA, Ferrari had to replace only the battery on Sainz’s car in terms of power unit components, in addition to repairing the monocoque. Under standard rules, the Spaniard was rightly penalised with a drop of ten places at the start.

But in this case, Ferrari is innocent and simply put – the driver in this case is not to blame for the fact that the race circuit was virtually unfit. Needless to say, this clearly goes to the FIA.

So the Italian stable applied to the FIA for an exemption. However, it was not granted and the FIA confirmed the penalty for Sainz. And this is exactly the sort of thing that F1 fans are currently furious about.

This is absolutely ridiculous, where is the justice?

A number of genuinely angry comments have gradually appeared under the above attached post from Sky Sports. Most of the fans are looking for some sort of justice and forgiveness for the Sainz penalty, other F1 fans have simply vented their pent up anger.

“That’s incredibly cruel for something that neither he nor Ferrari could control! The FIA needs to rethink its rules after this weekend,” writesCraig Tilley on the X platform.

“How can he be punished? Technically, the track is under the jurisdiction of the FIA. It‘s not Carlos’ problem that they didn’t check the track properly, ” adds Jose G. De La Rosa.

“The FIA should have given themselves a penalty for starting practice without checking everything properly. It wasn’t because of a driver error or a racing incident. It’s funny how they can bend the rules when it suits them. It’s a complete disgrace,” writes Shamentha Pillay.

Other comments speak similarly and it’s no wonder fans are angry. The FIA then had to re-inspect the track, so the start of the second practice session was delayed considerably. However, it went off without a hitch and was won by Charles Leclerc ahead of Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso.
