A new record! In addition to becoming World Champion for the third time in a row at the recent Qatar Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has once again rewritten Formula 1 history. The Red Bull driver finished the seventeenth race of the season in first place after leading on lap 769. No one has ever done that before.
Verstappen secured his third championship title in a row with a second place in the Qatar sprint. But beyond that, he can also celebrate another record broken.
The reigning triple champion has now surpassed Sebastian Vettel’s historic record from 2011. Verstappen has led the entire field in 769 laps this season, setting a new Formula One record.
The record was previously held by the former German driver, who also reached his milestone in Red Bull colours.
Vettel led a total of 739 laps in 2011, so Verstappen has not only far surpassed that record, but he may even increase it in the rest of the season.
There are still five more grand prix races to go before the end of the season, namely in the USA, Mexico, Brazil and Las Vegas, and the 2023 Formula One season will conclude on 26 November with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
In terms of the next rounds, Nigel Mansell holds third place. The Williams driver was at the front of the grid in 1992, having led 694 laps. Fourth place is also occupied by Vettel, who led 684 laps in 2013.
Michael Schumacher rounds out the elite five. The legendary racer led 683 laps in 2004, the season in which he won his last world title.
