The start of the top five European football leagues is slowly approaching. It’s time to introduce the most talented youngsters for whom the upcoming season could be a turning point. Who is definitely worth watching?
There are several talented footballers in the top five European leagues. Some have already managed to gain a certain amount of attention, but the breakthrough season could be waiting for them now. Only players who have not yet reached the age limit of 20 are mentioned.
Pedri (Barcelona)
The first one worth mentioning is the only 18-year-old Pedri. Barcelona’s rising star has had an excellent season. He started it in a joker role, but gradually earned a place in the starting lineup and played 52 games for Barcelona during which he scored 4 goals and added 6 assists.
His performances earned the young central midfielder a nomination for the Euros, where, among other things, he was one of the best Spanish footballers ever. In addition, he was nominated for the Olympics, which he also participated in and reached the final with the team.
It is a matter of conjecture whether too much has been put on Pedri’s back. What is certain is that he is a generational talent. Transfermarkt estimates his value at €80 million and it can be expected to rise even further. But he must now confirm that last season was no fluke. Above all, he needs to stay healthy.
Ansu Fati (Barcelona)
It’s definitely worth staying in Catalonia yet. The youngster, who hasn’t kicked a ball since last November due to injury, could be in for a breakthrough year.
Ansu Fati flew into adult football like big water, picking up goals and assists in a Barcelona jersey and looking like he would be one of the club’s biggest stars in the future. However, the aforementioned injury has sidelined him for a long time and it is questionable in what condition he will be able to return.
The four-time Spanish international will celebrate his 19th birthday in October and the date of his return is still unknown. However, it should happen before he turns 19. He will have to prove his mental and physical resilience. He will not have an easy time of it.
However, he will definitely be given more time to recover and get into shape, even at a young age. Can he do it?
Mason Greenwood (Manchester United)
Mason Greenwood, who signed a new long-term contract with Manchester United in February, is also expected to make a comeback. Why the comeback? It’s fair to say that his second season in the A-team was not as dazzling as his first.
In addition, there was a lot of media coverage about the player’s lifestyle, which was supposed to have a negative impact on his performance. However, at the age of 18, scoring 12 goals in 52 games during his second season in the Manchester United A-team? That’s simply not bad.
But the truth is that the first season was better. After all, 18 goals in 51 games sounds a bit better. Plus Greenwood got a bit more minutes in the last one. Still, he’s a force to be reckoned with in Manchester.
The English talent will just have to be waved off. The Red Devils’ offense is packed and the Manchester United alumnus will not get anything for free, which can only benefit him. Will he break the 20-goal barrier for the first time?
Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
We’ll stay in England for a moment. Bukayo Saka, who played for the A’s at the age of 19, is asking for attention For Arsenal. You could say he’s already one of the building blocks of Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up.
His qualities have been demonstrated live by Slavia Prague, but the talented youngster still has a lot to work on. His foundation at Arsenal is secure. A key season awaits him in terms of whether he can become a leader and a real driving force for the Gunners.
He must not be content with his position. It is not too difficult to rest on your laurels in the Arsenal squad. After all, many talents have passed through the London club and have ultimately squandered their potential. Can Saka do the opposite?
Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund)
But now permanently to Germany, where the talent is plentiful. However, following England, the first one to deserve a mention is Jude Bellingham, an English talent in the service of Borussia Dortmund.
The Westphalian side did not hesitate to pay 23 million euros to second-tier Birmingham for the unknown Englishman a year ago. It quickly became clear that it was a good investment. Already now the skilful midfielder is worth more than double that (55 million euros).
Dortmund use him in the centre of midfield, he played 46 games for Borussia last season with a 4+4 record. The talented winger excels with great dribbling, passing and defensive versatility. Already at the age of 18 he is a very complex player.
It is only a matter of time before Dortmund sell him and for how much. What is certain is that he won’t keep such a treasure in the team for long. Bellingham has even already played 7 games for the England national team, three of which were at the Euros. Will he now consolidate his position at Borussia?
Giovanni Reyna (Borussia Dortmund)
But there are more talented players in Dortmund. Another one is Gio Reyna, who is slowly working his way into the ranks of key players. But the question is whether this will continue to be the case after Marco Rose’s arrival as head coach.
Last season Reyna played 46 competitive games with a record of 7 goals and 7 assists. He is an offensive all-rounder and more options could open up for him after Sancho leaves. He will play not only as an offensive midfielder but also on the wings.
He has great dribbling, great ball possession, isn’t afraid to shoot from distance and can dish out key passes to boot. Considering his age (18 years old), the American talent is doing fantastic in all aspects.
It will be interesting to see how the new Borussia coach can use his skills. But he should definitely not play second fiddle.
Youssoufa Moukoko (Borussia Dortmund)
The latest talent defending the colours of Dortmund. Germany is counting on him a lot, Borussia too. Yet he almost ended his career when his age was in doubt. In November he will celebrate his 17th birthday.
He is the youngest goalscorer in the Bundesliga, and the youngest player to start in it. He holds the same title in the Champions League. As a 16-year-old, he has already scored three competitive goals for Dortmund, playing only 432 minutes.
He could have done better, but health complications slowed him down. However, he could be given more space this season. It’s not that he’s going to have a breakthrough season, but it’s certainly possible that he could shake things up this year and show what he can do.
Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich)
Not long ago, the 18-year-old offensive midfielder was deciding whether to represent England or Germany. He has now completed the European Championships, where he played in two games for Joachim Löw’s team. It was only for a few minutes, but that counts too.
Bayern see huge promise in Musial for the future. Especially thanks to his performances last season, in which he slowly started to make his mark. He has played in 38 games, scoring 7 goals and adding an assist.
He should get even more space in the upcoming season. Munich are counting on Musiala to replace the legendary Thomas Muller one day and want to build him up slowly.
The Stuttgart native has clinically accurate finishing, as well as passing skills that can break down defences. On top of that, he has great ball control on his feet and can trouble even great and experienced defenders with his dribbling. This season could be his.
Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)
The last name on the list is Florian Wirtz. The teammate of Patrik Schick jumped into the Bundesliga already in the 2019/20 season, but it was only for a few minutes. However, he became a full-fledged member of the starting lineup this past season.
After all, he played 38 competitive matches with an excellent record of 8 goals scored and 8 assists. In short, an outstanding performance. Especially considering that the Leverkusen gem only celebrated his 18th birthday in March.
He seems to be able to fully replace Kai Havertz, whose goals and creativity the team lacked after his departure to Chelsea. And that there is still plenty of room for improvement given his young age.
While it was disappointing that Wirtz didn’t get an invite to the Euros, having played more than the likes of Musiala, there is no reason to despair. After all, he could already pull Germany through as a key player at future championships. He is already a big part of Leverkusen’s game.
But now he has to show that the good season was not just a coincidence. Leverkusen is counting on his performance and will logically put a bit more responsibility on him. Can Wirtz stand up to it and ask for a career move?
