Thierry Henry has had a very successful playing career in which he has played with many legends of the sport and won the biggest trophies with them. However, the French striker’s best teammate can be found at Arsenal.
Most football fans would probably agree on two names – Lionel Messi, or Zinedine Zidane.
Henry has played with both of these greats and reached the most valuable trophy possible. Only he didn’t name either when asked who was the best player he had ever played with.
For the French cannonballer, the best was Dennis Bergkamp, with whom and others Henry went through one entire Premier League season without defeat. Moreover, this group still holds the longest league streak without defeat – 49 games (May 7, 2003 – October 24, 2004).
The Dutch striker played 410 games in an Arsenal jersey, during which he scored 113 goals and assisted 93 more. His former teammate boasts better statistics, having scored 228 goals and assisted 106 more in 376 games.
“I saw Dennis every day at practice for 7 years and I was always fascinated by how he respected the game and was totally committed to it,” Henry told CBS Sports.
As great a football player as Henry was, he was not a coach anymore. After unsuccessful stints with AS Monaco and the Montreal Impact, he returned to the Belgian national team under the wing of Roberto Martínez, where he remains today.
Bergkamp too took up coaching, having spent most of his time passing on his experience to young talent at Ajax. Since 2019, he has been working as an assistant coach at Almere City U21.
