In addition to the Ballon d’Or, the France Football Gala also announces the “Yashin trophy”, which will be awarded to the best goalkeeper in the world for the previous year. Like the Ballon d’Or, this trophy will also go to Madrid, with Thibaut Courtois being the deserved winner.

The two men at either end of Real Madrid’s line-up have been instrumental in an extremely successful 2021/22 season. And together, they also flew out of the Spanish capital on a private jet to Paris on Monday to receive the awards for the world’s best player and best goalkeeper.

Karim Benzema was in charge of Los Blancos’ offensive, while Thibaut Courtois, on the other side of the pitch, ensured that Real always scored one goal less than their opponents.

The Yashino trophy for the best goalkeeper in the world was last awarded to Gianluigi Donnarumma, before that to Alisson. Alisson Becker, Ederson, Mike Maignan, Yassine ‘Bono’ Bounou, Edouard Mendy, Manuel Neuer, Jan Oblak, Kevin Trapp and Hugo Lloris were nominated this year along with Courtois.

Courtois is thus a one-time deserved winner, having led Real Madrid to win the Champions League, La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. In the final against Liverpool in particular, he captivated the world as he stamped on Salah and co. and caught several Reds chances.

Alisson Becker of Liverpool is second, Ederson of Manchester City is third, Edouard Mendy of Chelsea is fourth and Mike Maignan of AC Milan is fifth.
