Tuesday’s Champions League programme promises a spectacular show. Manchester City will face a huge test. Bayern Munich, after knocking out PSG, is looking to take on another giant. And how to do it? In Bavaria, they’re clear – play like Bayern.
Bavaria are slowly recovering from a surprise move by the management of Germany’s biggest club, when Bayern Munich literally blew up the chair under Julian Nagelsmann and brought in Thomas Tuchel instead.
It was supposed to be a reaction to deteriorating play and results. The fans were shocked, Nagelsmann was shocked and the players were shocked as well. At that time Bayern were in the running for the treble, but that’s in the past. The Munich giant was knocked out of the cup under Tuchel.
But the Champions League journey will be all the more important. With Nagelsmann, Bayern defeated PSG in two games and now Manchester City awaits. Will Tuchel follow his predecessor? That remains to be seen.
But the Bayern players are in a positive mood. After all, they have won every game in the Champions League this season, keeping a clean sheet in seven of their eight matches. Only the players from Plzen have been able to get into the Bavarians’ net. The stars of Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSG have all come up empty.
“Now we have another good opponent. Hopefully we can build on what we have done,” Matthijs de Light told the club’s website. And it was the Dutch defender who was the hero of the second game against PSG. When the French giant was close to scoring, de Ligt turned the ball away just before crossing the goal line. PSG would surely get the goal back in the game.
“It was even more important than scoring the goal. It energised us a lot. Then we knew we could do anything,” Kingsley Coman is clear for a change. He and de Ligt then agree that the Citizens have tremendous attacking power, especially with Erling Haaland at the tip.
“We all have to play together. We defended Mbappé, Neymar and Messi together. Playing one-on-one against such players is not easy. But if you play intelligently, anything is possible,” de Ligt is looking for a recipe.
According to Coman, the path to success will be simple: “We have to defend with a lot of energy, we have to be very motivated and play like Bayern. Confident, with desire and give everything.”
