They’re asking for a transfer: 19-year-old Gnonto is on a roll for Italy’s top flight, his name is already known in the Premier League

Leeds have been on a roll since the start of the season, yet Wilfried Gnonto is a steady member of the Italian national team at 19 years old. A beautiful calling card for the Premier League, the best league in the world, but also a reward for the good performances of the young speedster. Remember this name!

Wilfried Gnonto gained his first first first league experience in the FC Zurich jersey. In the 2020/21 season, he came off the bench in the Swiss top flight and helped the team save themselves in the penultimate round.

From the bottom to the top of the league

The following season, the Italian speedster started the year as a journeyman, but entered the spring as a stable member of the starting line-up. And the coaches’ bet on youth paid off, as Zurich improved their eighth place from the previous season to a fantastic first place.

Gnonto contributed to the success with 11 points, scoring eight times and assisting three times. He added two more goals in the League Cup, which was noticed by the senior Italian national team.

The reward was a senior national team and a transfer

In June, the captain of the U21s made his debut for the A-team in a Nations League match against Germany and immediately provided an assist. Since then, he has started every Squadra Azzuri match, even scoring in the rematch with the Germans.

After his transfer to Leeds, Gnonto waited perhaps surprisingly long for his debut, even though the team’s results were not ideal. Jesse Marsch bet on his horses and the summer signing from Zurich only made his debut in the 2-1 win at Anfield.

In the next round against Bournemouth, he was trusted for the entire second half. He came on at 1::3, but with excellent dribbling he tore apart the opponent’s defence and, most importantly, with an assist for the decisive goal, he contributed to the amazing turnaround to 4::3.

From that moment on, he was no longer in the line-up for the league match. No one else in the team has the strength in one-on-one battles, nor the drive to the goal. And frankly, he’s also the best at willingly falling over, but unfortunately that’s a bit of his position.

Excellent dribbling and improving shooting

He has worked on his finishing as the minutes and confidence has grown. He opened the scoring in the 2-2 home draw with West Ham with a thunderous shot, and after the World Cup he contributed another thunderous shot to the same result against Manchester United.

For Leeds, Gnonto is an extremely important player for the rest of the season. The club has sacked coach Marsch and is looking for a new path to salvation, typologically it is Gnonto and his form that will be important. He is one of the few players in The Whites’ side who can decide a game with his individual quality.

And if he adds a couple of goals and maintains his performance, he can think at a higher level. The pacey winger would suit Everton, Brentford and maybe Brighton, assuming of course that the Toffees save themselves.
