Women’s football club FC Barcelona face elimination from the Copa de la Reina after a 9-0 win at Osasuna. The reason? A similar situation to Real Madrid’s elimination from a few years ago.

Barcelona fielded striker Geyse Ferreira against Osasuna. The 24-year-old Brazilian international even scored the fourth goal in a convincing win.

Nothing unusual until Osasuna filed an official complaint to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Why? Their complaint stems from the red card Geyse received last season when she was still kicking for Madrid CFF.

She headed to the Catalan capital, then in the summer, and Spanish rules state that Geyse must serve the penalty for the red card she received. Similar to Cristiano Ronaldo, who has not yet been able to make his debut for Al Nassr after being sent off when he was a Manchester United player.

“If the competition ends or the club concerned is eliminated and there is a match to serve for the sending off, the penalty will be carried over to the following season. The sanctioned player will be re-scheduled to the next match regardless of whether the sanctioned player changes club or competition.”

If it were decided that Geyse could not indeed start the match, Barcelona could be banned from this season’s Copa de la Reina, which it has won three times in a row. If we look back in history, we can see the connection to 2015 and Real Madrid’s men’s team being eliminated from the Copa del Rey after fielding an ineligible player.

Denis Cheryshev scored the opening goal in Real’s 3-1 win over Cadiz. But the Russian international, who now kicks for Italian club Venezia, was due to serve his sentence after receiving three yellow cards for Villarreal in the previous season.

Ironically, Barcelona were not the only club to field an ineligible player in the cup this week. Sevilla may also be eliminated from the tournament after fielding Nagore Calderón in their 1-0 win over Villarreal.

Calderon was sent off against Tenerife’s UD Granadilla in the Copa de la Reina quarter-finals last season and so should not have played in Tuesday’s match. Barcelona coach Jonathan Giraldez said Geysa’s exclusion did not appear on the RFEF website, which now leads to the question of whether the governing body’s notification system is working as it should.

On the other hand, the exclusions of Geys and Calderón are believed to have been mentioned in other RFEF documents. The Royal Spanish Football Federation will make a final decision in the coming days.
